The federal government Real ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued Driver's License and Identification Cards. The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, is a coordinated effort by the states and Federal Government to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents, which should inhibit terrorists' ability to evade detection by using fraudulent Identification.
By October 1, 2020 a Real ID compliant driver's license or identification card will be required to board a domestic flight or enter designated federal facilities. A current Kansas license will work to board a domestic flight or enter a designated federal facility until September 30, 2020. You may already be flagged with the read ID indicator and will receive that on your new license upon renewal or replacement, if you have received a new driver's license or identification card in Kansas since 2011. However, we cannot guarantee this is the case, so we encourage customers to bring in the documentation to be on the safe side.
If you do not bring in the required documents, you will be issued a Non-Real ID compliant driver's license or identification card which will have the words "Not For Federal ID" printed on the card.
