Marlatt Avenue & US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard Intersection Project
Set to Begin in Riley County
Weather permitting, on Wednesday, May 27, a realignment project will begin for the Marlatt Avenue and US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard intersection in Riley County. The Marlatt Avenue and US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard intersection realignment project, a cooperative project between the Kansas Department of Transportation and the City of Manhattan, includes the realignment of Marlatt Avenue with US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard. Crews will work daily, Monday through Friday, during daylight hours.
The intersection project includes earth work (grading), concrete pavement, asphalt surfacing within the intersection, traffic signal addition, reinforced concrete box (RCB)/culvert extensions, and new pavement markings. The RCB under US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard will be lengthened on the east and west side of US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard. Another RCB will be added to the south side of the existing RCB to provide a pedestrian underpass walkway for US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard. Marlatt Avenue will be realigned to match the two adjoining legs of the intersection instead of their current offset configuration. There will be permanent traffic signals installed at the intersection. South of the intersection, Walters Drive will be widened to provide a right-turn lane onto US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard.
Marlatt Avenue and Walters Drive will be closed, and US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard will be reduced to one lane each direction through varying phases of the project. There will be a 12’ width restriction throughout the duration of the project.
During closures on Marlatt Avenue, a marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour from the Marlatt Avenue/Casement Road intersection south to the Casement Road/Allen Road intersection, west to the Allen Road/US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard intersection, north to the Kimball Avenue/US-24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard intersection, west to the Kimball Avenue/Denison Avenue intersection, then north to the Denison Avenue/Marlatt Avenue intersection. Drivers should expect some minor delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.
Ebert Construction Inc. and Subsidiary is the primary contractor on this intersection realignment project with a total contract cost of $3,148,682. The scheduled completion date for the entire project is late 2010.
The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through project work zones.
